PERSPECTIVES: Can Mycotoxin Adsorption Be Pushed Further?\u00a0<\/span>Biochem<\/span>\u00a0Says Yes, Launching New Product<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> 22 January 2020 – In recent times, much progress has been made in raising awareness of the costs mycotoxins are imposing on the industry, and a variety of both inorganic and organic substances have been employed to try and mitigate them. However, these have only gotten us so far; while existing products are able to cope with some types of mycotoxins, others such as DON remain difficult to combat with our current strategies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> Strengthened by their 15 years of experience in the mycotoxins sector,\u00a0<\/span>Biochem<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Zusatzstoffe<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Handels<\/span>– und\u00a0<\/span>Produktionsges<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>mbH<\/span>\u00a0is now prepared to take the fight against mycotoxins a step further with\u00a0<\/span>B.I.<\/span>O.Tox<\/span>\u00ae Activ8, a new toxin binder with an extended adsorption profile and with natural detoxifiers.\u00a0 Ahead of the product\u2019s launch in Europe this month,\u00a0<\/span>Feedinfo<\/span>\u00a0caught up with\u00a0<\/span>Dr.<\/span>\u00a0Heiko\u00a0<\/span>Greimann<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Biochem\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0Managing Director, and\u00a0<\/span>Maik<\/span>\u00a0Hinrichs, R&D Manager, to understand what makes this product so uniquely innovative.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> Unprecedented adsorption capacity<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> According to\u00a0<\/span>Dr.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Greimann<\/span>, one of the most remarkable features of\u00a0<\/span>B.I.<\/span>O.Tox<\/span>\u00ae Activ8 is its extended adsorption profile, which includes the ability to bind deoxynivalenol (DON), a notoriously difficult mycotoxin to adsorb.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> As he explains,\u00a0<\/span>Biochem\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0approach to mycotoxins is built around adsorbents, ingredients which can irreversibly bind the mycotoxins in the digestive tract of the animals, as the optimal way to neutralize mycotoxins in animals. \u201c<\/span>Biochem<\/span>\u00a0mainly uses adsorbents because these are fast-acting and have very good properties for the further processing of feed. Compared to other mycotoxin management solutions based around specific microorganisms or enzymes, adsorbents are heat stable, insensitive to pressure, and stable over long periods in storage.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> However, adsorbents also have their disadvantages: while different clay minerals offer decent adsorption capacity towards aflatoxin B1,\u00a0<\/span>Dr.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Greimann<\/span>\u00a0asserts that their adsorption of other mycotoxins are \u201cinsufficient.\u201d This was the limitation that\u00a0<\/span>Biochem<\/span>\u00a0set out to overcome with the technology it refers to as \u201cactivated adsorbents.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> In short, an activated adsorbent has been processed in order to make it \u201cstickier,\u201d or more likely to bind permanently to the mycotoxins it\u00a0<\/span>comes into contact with<\/span>. \u201cIn this context, activation refers to the physical and\/or chemical treatment of surfaces; a mechanical or thermal processing of the raw materials leads to a surface enlargement and to an optimized pore mesh or to an optimized pore size distribution, so that it has the correct size for the adsorption of the different mycotoxins,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Dr.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Greimann<\/span>\u00a0says. \u201cSince the interaction between mycotoxin and surface is electrostatic in nature, another crucial parameter is charge density: the amount of charge in relation to the surface piece.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> This may sound simple. However, it is in fact the product of a long process of trial and error to find the exact effect of each new treatment on the adsorbent\u2019s binding capacity. \u201cThese optimizations cannot be determined theoretically,\u201d he claims. \u201cHence, after each \u2018working step,\u2019 an empirical examination is necessary.\u201d Thus, what seems to be an incremental improvement in adsorption capacity is\u00a0<\/span>actually the<\/span>\u00a0result of\u00a0<\/span>Biochem\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0intensive study and process improvement. \u201cRigorous testing of these activated raw materials\u00a0<\/span>have<\/span>\u00a0occupied the company for years.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> Natural support for tissues on the front lines<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> Of course, a perfect, failure-proof mycotoxin solution remains elusive. Realistically speaking, there will always be some\u00a0<\/span>amount<\/span>\u00a0of mycotoxins in feed; soil conditions, humidity, storage, and an increasingly warming world will all conspire to promote fungal growth. Moreover, even with a toxin binder whose physiochemical properties have been boosted, adsorption has mechanistic limits,\u00a0<\/span>Maik<\/span>\u00a0Hinrichs, R&D Manager at\u00a0<\/span>Biochem<\/span>\u00a0acknowledges. \u201cIt can be assumed that a small amount of mycotoxin is absorbed by the animal and thus enters the animal\u2019s bloodstream.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> It is therefore prudent to plan accordingly. This is where the second novelty of\u00a0<\/span>B.I.<\/span>O.Tox<\/span>\u00a0Activ8 comes into play. The new product includes phytogenic additives including polyphenols and\u00a0<\/span>Silybum<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>marianum<\/span>, intended to support tissues that bear the brunt of exposure to mycotoxins. The first of these is the gut epithelium. \u201cThis important barrier to unwelcome substances like endotoxins may suffer extremely from the cytotoxic effects of mycotoxins. The result may be a leaky gut, which leads to even more toxin adsorption and the appearance of other secondary, pathological disorders like endotoxin associated diseases,\u201d Mr. Hinrichs says.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> Another important recipient of the product\u2019s phytogenic support is the liver. \u201cThe liver carries out the main task when it comes to the metabolic detoxification of mycotoxins. In this process, highly reactive oxygen species (so-called oxygen radicals) are formed. These highly reactive intermediates can react with proteins or lipids and damage them permanently,\u201d Mr. Hinrichs recounts. \u201cOne important feature of the phytogenic additives (e.g. polyphenols) in\u00a0<\/span>B.I.<\/span>O.Tox<\/span>\u00ae Activ8 is to react with the radicals and neutralize them. Due to their special chemical and electrical structure, these substances are also known as radical scavengers and membrane protectors.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> Tailored solution for\u00a0<\/span>particular needs<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> This latest addition to the\u00a0<\/span>Biochem<\/span>\u00a0stable of brands reflects the company\u2019s philosophy in mycotoxin management: letting market needs drive increased specialization. \u201cOur toxin binders portfolio has expanded as the market has developed new requirements based on evolutions in areas such as genetics (the spread of highly prolific animals), climatic changes, or special legal requirements (for example, limits on heavy metals in mineral supplements),\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Dr.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Greimann<\/span>\u00a0observes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p> Thus over the last 15 years, the company\u2019s portfolio has evolved from the original \u201call-purpose\u201d mycotoxin binder\u00a0<\/span>B.I.<\/span>O.Tox<\/span>\u00ae (still a potent and very successful product today, according to\u00a0<\/span>Dr.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Greimann<\/span>) and into more specific products for particular indications. Today, this includes\u00a0<\/span>B.I.O.Tox<\/span>\u00ae Z, with a strong focus on zearalenone to prevent fertility disorders in breeding and parent animals;\u00a0<\/span>Mybind<\/span>, an organic mycotoxin binder for organic farming; and\u00a0<\/span>B.I.O.Tox<\/span>\u00ae Farm, which allow farmers in the EU to make their own mixtures on their farms in accordance with EU regulations.
