Compared to other mycotoxin management solutions based around specific microorganisms or enzymes, adsorbents are heat stable, insensitive to pressure, and stable over long periods in storage.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p> <p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, adsorbents also have their disadvantages: while different clay minerals offer decent adsorption capacity towards aflatoxin B1,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Greimann<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0asserts that their adsorption of other mycotoxins are \u201cinsufficient.\u201d This was the limitation that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Biochem<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0set out to overcome with the technology it refers to as \u201cactivated adsorbents.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p> <p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In short, an activated adsorbent has been processed in order to make it \u201cstickier,\u201d or more likely to bind permanently to the mycotoxins it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">comes into contact with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. \u201cIn this context, activation refers to the physical and\/or chemical treatment of surfaces; a mechanical or thermal processing of the raw materials leads to a surface enlargement and to an optimized pore mesh or to an optimized pore size distribution, so that it has the correct size for the adsorption of the different mycotoxins,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dr.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Greimann<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0says. \u201cSince the interaction between mycotoxin and surface is electrostatic in nature, another crucial parameter is charge density: the amount of charge in relation to the surface piece.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p> <p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This may sound simple. However, it is in fact the product of a long process of trial and error to find the exact effect of each new treatment on the adsorbent\u2019s binding capacity. \u201cThese optimizations cannot be determined theoretically,\u201d he claims. \u201cHence, after each \u2018working step,\u2019 an empirical examination is necessary.\u201d Thus, what seems to be an incremental improvement in adsorption capacity is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">actually the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0result of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Biochem\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0intensive study and process improvement. \u201cRigorous testing of these activated raw materials\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0occupied the company for years.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p> <p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Natural support for tissues on the front lines<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p> <p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Of course, a perfect, failure-proof mycotoxin solution remains elusive. Realistically speaking, there will always be some\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">amount<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of mycotoxins in feed; soil conditions, humidity, storage, and an increasingly warming world will all conspire to promote fungal growth. Moreover, even with a toxin binder whose physiochemical properties have been boosted, adsorption has mechanistic limits,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Maik<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Hinrichs, R&amp;D Manager at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Biochem<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0acknowledges. \u201cIt can be assumed that a small amount of mycotoxin is absorbed by the animal and thus enters the animal\u2019s bloodstream.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p> <p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is therefore prudent to plan accordingly. This is where the second novelty of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">B.I.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O.Tox<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Activ8 comes into play. The new product includes phytogenic additives including polyphenols and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Silybum<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">marianum<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, intended to support tissues that bear the brunt of exposure to mycotoxins. The first of these is the gut epithelium. \u201cThis important barrier to unwelcome substances like endotoxins may suffer extremely from the cytotoxic effects of mycotoxins. The result may be a leaky gut, which leads to even more toxin adsorption and the appearance of other secondary, pathological disorders like endotoxin associated diseases,\u201d Mr. Hinrichs says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p> <p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another important recipient of the product\u2019s phytogenic support is the liver. \u201cThe liver carries out the main task when it comes to the metabolic detoxification of mycotoxins. In this process, highly reactive oxygen species (so-called oxygen radicals) are formed. These highly reactive intermediates can react with proteins or lipids and damage them permanently,\u201d Mr. Hinrichs recounts. \u201cOne important feature of the phytogenic additives (e.g. polyphenols) in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">B.I.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">O.Tox<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00ae Activ8 is to react with the radicals and neutralize them.
