The city is also a major academic and scientific hub, home to several renowned universities and research institutions.<\/p>

The University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest<\/strong> is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the world, with origins dating back more than two centuries. As Hungary\u2019s only veterinary school, it has a long-standing tradition of excellence in teaching, research, and clinical practice, attracting students from all over the world.<\/p>

The lectures of the 2026 Davis-Thompson Foundation Eastern European Veterinary Pathology Meeting <\/strong>will be held at the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest, offering participants a unique opportunity to combine professional development with the chance to experience the charm and culture of this remarkable city. Speakers<\/strong><\/h3>

Prof.<\/strong> Dr. Rachel Cianciolo<\/strong> has expertise in nephropathology with more than 15 years of experience in evaluation of renal specimens through advanced diagnostic modalities.<\/p>

As a veterinary student at University of Pennsylvania, she learned from veterinary nephrologists who performed hemodialysis and managed complicated cases of acute kidney injury. She stayed at University of Pennsylvania to complete a residency in anatomic pathology and then completed a PhD through a combined program at North Carolina State University and GlaxoSmithKline. Her thesis research investigated the renal tubulointerstitial response to chronic proteinuria in a rat model of Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis. She then completed a 1.5 year Fellowship in the Division of Nephropathology at University of North Carolina\u2019s School of Medicine, where she learned the diagnostic algorithms of glomerular disease in humans and evaluated > 1000 human renal biopsies, using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and immunofluorescence (IF). She helped optimize these modalities for veterinary nephropathology as co-director of the International Veterinary Renal Pathology Service (IVRPS). She was an assistant and then associate professor at the Ohio State University from 2013 to 2021, serving as a diagnostic pathologist and teaching in the curriculum. She has since joined Zoetis Reference Labs as a diagnostic pathologist, focusing on urinary system specimens. She remains a nephropathologist with the IVRPS, where she evaluates >300 samples a year with TEM and IF. As a Founding Member of the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology, she teaches in the curriculum to train future veterinary nephrologists and urologists. Lastly, she continues to publish in pathology and nephrology journals, having authored > 90 peer-reviewed papers.<\/p> <\/div> <\/div>

Prof.<\/strong> Dr. Kate Hughes<\/strong> graduated from the University of Liverpool. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, and a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Specialist in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology. She undertook a PhD funded by the Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship at the University of Cambridge. She is currently Professor of Veterinary Anatomic Pathology at the University of Cambridge, UK, where she combines diagnostic pathology, research and teaching. Kate is passionate about the pathology of leporids, both pet rabbits and free-living hares and rabbits, and this is one of her main research interests.<\/p> <\/div> <\/div>

Prof. Dr. M\u00edra M\u00e1ndoki<\/strong> has been actively involved in veterinary pathology education since 2000. She teaches dissection, histopathology, plenary courses and theoretical lectures in veterinary pathology for third- and fourth-year veterinary students in both Hungarian and English. Since January 1, 2018, Prof. M\u00e1ndoki has served as Head of the Department of Pathology.<\/p>

In 2016, Prof. M\u00e1ndoki launched the course New Forms and Tools of Knowledge Transfer in Veterinary Education, taught in Hungarian and English. In 2020, she introduced the elective course Life Skills for Vets, developed in collaboration with experts in communication, digital technologies, and entrepreneurship from other departments. Her teaching excellence is reflected in student evaluations, where she is consistently ranked among the top ten university lecturers.<\/p>

Her main research interests include veterinary pathology, with a particular focus on poultry diseases such as runting\u2013stunting syndrome and viruses causing infectious nephritis in chickens; and educational development, including continuing professional development (CPD), teacher training, communication, presentation skills, feedback, and assessment.<\/p>

She is for the second term the EAEVE representative in the board of VetCEE.<\/p> <\/div> <\/div>

Dr. Anna Szilasi <\/strong>is a veterinary pathologist and university lecturer at the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest. She obtained her DVM degree cum laude<\/em> in 2014 and completed her PhD in 2021, focusing on the molecular epidemiology and genetic characterization of feline retroviruses. Her academic and research interests include viral diseases of cats, oncologic lesions in dogs and cats, and the application of in situ hybridization techniques in veterinary diagnostics.<\/p>

She currently works as a diagnostic pathologist at VetMed and M\u00e1trix Laboratories, alongside her academic role, where she is involved in diagnostic pathology, teaching in Hungarian and English, research, and student mentoring. Dr. Szilasi has extensive clinical experience in small animal practice and regularly presents at national and international veterinary conferences, including WSAVA, BSAVA, and HSAVA meetings. She is an active member of several professional and university committees and is affiliated with the Davis\u2013Thompson Foundation.<\/p> <\/div> <\/div>

Dr. Tamara Dolen\u0161ek,<\/strong> is the regional representative for Eastern Europe at the European Division of the Davis-Thompson Foundation and a board member of the Davis-Thompson Foundation. She graduated in 2013 at the Veterinary Faculty, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. She finished her Master\u2019s degree and anatomic pathology residency at the Royal Veterinary College in London, after which she became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and returned to the Veterinary Faculty in Ljubljana.<\/p> <\/div> <\/div>
