The subject of Chemistry<\/strong> contains 30 lectures and 30 laboratory practicals in the winter term. The theoretical part of the Chemistry course is taught in a hybrid format. Half of the students attend the 30 classroom lectures in person, while the other half follow them online every week. Participation in the laboratory practicals<\/strong> is compulsory<\/strong> and attendance will be recorded each<\/strong> time.<\/p>

Any recent Chemistry textbooks of college or higher level can be used (e.g.<\/em> Raymond Chang, Ken Goldsby: Chemistry<\/strong>, McGraw-Hill Inc., 13th<\/sup> edition, 2018<\/em>). The use of the Chemistry Laboratory Manual<\/strong> is prescribed because this Manual serves as the laboratory protocol, as well. The free electronic versions of the lecture (<\/strong>slides in pdf and mp4) can be downloaded from the E-learning system.<\/strong><\/p>

Participation in the Laboratory Training<\/strong><\/p>

The duration of each practical is 2 \u00d7 45 min., and they will be held without breaks:<\/p>

Monday, 8:15 – 9:45 <\/strong>for groups 5, 6<\/strong><\/p>

Monday, 10:15 – 11:45 <\/strong>for groups 3, 4<\/strong><\/p>

Monday, 12:15 – 13:45 <\/strong>for groups 9, 10<\/strong><\/p>

Monday, 14:15 – 15:45 <\/strong>for groups 1, 2<\/strong><\/p>

Tuesday, 8:15 \u2013 9:45<\/strong> for groups 7, 8<\/strong><\/p>

at the F Building, close to the entrance of the gym. The individual workplace of students in the Laboratory is optional but it should be kept during both Terms. Participation in laboratory exercises will be not allowed without<\/em> a lab coat, Manual, and safety goggles <\/strong>(the latter is provided in the lab). In case of missed lab exercise<\/strong>, the student has to take a make-up lab next week. <\/strong>For the make-up lab,<\/strong> the student has to fill the missed lab in the Manual and show it to the supervisor. (S)he will be asked a few short, theoretical questions from the missed lab(s). If they are properly answered then one can get a valid signature for the missed lab.<\/p>

Preparation for Lab Exercises<\/strong><\/p>

The goal of laboratory practices is to perform experiments and demonstrations in the laboratory, which will provide empirical evidence for the factual knowledge obtained from the theoretical lectures. A thorough theoretical preparedness<\/strong> is needed for successful practical laboratory work. Before the given chemistry lab, it is important to review the relevant chapters of the lecture(s)\/textbook(s) of chemistry and to study the extensions found in the Manual. Supervisors might check<\/strong> the preparedness and work of the students during the lab exercises. In case of unsatisfactory <\/strong>preparedness, the given practical will not <\/strong>be accepted<\/strong>, therefore it should be repeated<\/strong> in the same week or<\/strong> as a make-up lab.<\/p>

Each laboratory experiment should be done individually<\/strong> (except for demo-, and group experiments) and should be started<\/strong> right after the introduction. The observations<\/strong> and experimental data<\/strong> should be instantly<\/strong> documented after the given experiment on the odd pages of the Manual. However, writing the reaction equations<\/strong> and calculations<\/strong> in the Manual, before<\/strong> (at home) the given lab practical is highly <\/strong>recommended.<\/p>

At the end of the practical, students have to clean<\/strong> used lab tools and set back<\/strong> the reagents to their original place. Before leaving the laboratory Manuals will be checked and signed by one of the supervisors.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
