Respect for traditions, appreciation of our predecessors’ achievements, and preserving the memory of heroes have always been fundamental values for the community of the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest. On the occasion of Hungarian Heroes’ Day in 2026, we once again paid tribute to those veterinarians and veterinary students who sacrificed their lives in the service of their homeland.

The commemoration, initiated years ago by the University’s Circle of Friends, has become an important tradition at our institution and a shared act of remembrance for the veterinary profession. Each year, the event provides an opportunity to recall stories of courage, dedication, and perseverance that continue to serve as an inspiration for present and future generations.

As part of this year’s ceremony, wreaths were laid at the memorial plaques located on the walls of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry, and the Central Library. The event was a fitting tribute to those who, during some of the most challenging periods of history, served their country with humanity, professional commitment, and bravery.

Prior to the wreath-laying ceremony, the attendees were welcomed by Major General Prof. Frigyes Janza (ret.), Honorary Citizen of the University, who delivered the commemorative address.

Hungarian Heroes’ Day reminds us each year that heroism is not only demonstrated on the battlefield but also through personal integrity, service to the community, and self-sacrifice. For our University, it is important to pass this legacy on to future generations of veterinary professionals and to preserve the memory of those whose example continues to guide and inspire us today.

We respectfully remember our heroes, whose legacy lives on within the University community.
