The case report, coordinated by first author Gábor Lorászkó, describes an advanced case of glaucoma diagnosed in a Siberian tiger living under zoological park conditions.

The affected animal exhibited clinical signs consistent with progressive vision impairment, including difficulties with spatial orientation, altered behaviour and reactions that were initially interpreted as aggression. Comprehensive ophthalmological examinations revealed intraocular pressure levels several times higher than the normal range. The condition resulted in severe and irreversible damage to the retina and optic nerve system, ultimately leading to complete blindness.

The study is of particular interest because glaucoma has been only rarely described in large felids, and the available scientific literature on the condition in these species remains limited. The case provides valuable insights into ophthalmological disorders affecting endangered big cat species and contributes to the growing body of knowledge supporting veterinary care in zoological institutions.

The publication also highlights the importance of considering serious and painful underlying diseases when evaluating vision loss and behavioural abnormalities in zoo animals. The findings underscore the value of advanced ophthalmological and diagnostic imaging techniques, which can play a crucial role in maintaining animal health and welfare, facilitating early diagnosis, and supporting informed treatment decisions in zoological medicine.

Read more: https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/16/11/1647

The case provides valuable insights into ophthalmological disorders affecting endangered big cat species and contributes to the growing body of knowledge supporting veterinary care in zoological institutions.

[38,1

post-208153","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-featured","category-news
["GET
