List of Journal that engage in objectionable practices 2026

Unfortunately, along with the rise of open access publishing, an increasing number of journals have emerged that engage in questionable publishing practices. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) established a committee in the spring of 2023 to protect the scientific community and identify inappropriate practices.

As a result of the committee’s work, the list for the year 2026 has been compiled and is available at: https://www.mtmt.hu/objectionable_journals

Please note that the list is updated annually. Therefore, a previously considered acceptable journal may appear on the objectionable list in a later year. We kindly ask our researchers and lecturers to always consult the latest version of the list before making publication decisions.

Publications appearing in journals included on the list:

  • Cannot be considered in MTA applications, doctoral procedures, or academic nominations if the journal was on the list in the year of publication.

  • Citations from such journals also cannot be counted.

The presence of a journal on the list can also be verified on the MTMT website under the “Journals” menu. The journal’s information page highlights in bold red the note “engages in inappropriate publishing practices.”

If you find a journal on the list that you believe should not be included, you may request a review through MTMT. The review process involves the relevant scientific section of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

We kindly ask all academic community members to refrain from publishing in journals that appear on the objectionable list to uphold the integrity of scientific research.
