The diamond open access

Open access (OA) has become a defining trend in scholarly publishing over the past decades. Its aim—also articulated by the Budapest Open Access Initiative—is to ensure that research results are free and available to anyone with internet access, and to support the development of individual scientific fields.

Gold OA: the author pays
With the spread of open access, major academic publishers introduced a new business model. Under Gold OA, the reader, not the author, pays the publication costs. In veterinary journals, these fees can be substantial, ranging from a few hundred euros to €5,000–6,000. This poses a serious challenge for researchers who want their work to be immediately and freely accessible in an internationally recognised journal.

Green route: the role of institutional repositories
A third form of open access is the so-called green route. In this model, authors make a version of their publication—typically the manuscript or the peer-reviewed version—available in an institutional or subject repository. This allows research results to be freely accessible without requiring payment from authors or readers. The University of Veterinary Medicine maintains such a repository, HUVETA, where numerous scientific articles, theses, and dissertations are available through open access. HUVETA not only increases the transparency and accessibility of scholarly communication but also enhances the visibility of Hungarian and international research.

Diamond OA: publishing free of charge
There are also open-access journals that charge neither authors nor readers. This is the so-called diamond OA, in which an institution or publisher covers publication costs. Articles published in this way are immediately accessible to everyone upon release.

Recommended veterinary journals
The journals listed below are indexed in Scopus, have a Scimago Journal Rank (SJR), and belong to the “veterinary” category. Authors can publish in these journals free of charge, while their work becomes widely and openly readable immediately after publication.
