Living Library – about digital skill development

The Living Library event is organised within the framework of the Go Digital Go Global Erasmus+ project.

This project aims to equip young people with the competencies needed for receiving and retaining a job online, and/or online entrepreneurship. Also to equip young people with skills that will bring the digital world closer to them and make it easier for them to take up online work or perform tasks that take place in the online space.

The project is created by the implementation of 4 countries (Italy, Bulgaria, Hungary, Portugal). We organize a Living Library event in each country, and in Hungary, this innovative idea is implemented in the beautiful art nouveau library of the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest.

The Living Library is a non-formal educational tool that helps to present sensitive or novel topics through direct experience. The Living Library was initially a challenging tool, usually dealing with prejudice and discrimination, but has since evolved to address interesting and novel topics in an engaging way. It works like a normal library: visitors can browse the available titles in the catalogue, select the book they want to read, and you can borrow them for a limited time. After reading, readers take the book back to the library and, if they want, they can borrow another one. The only difference is that in the Living Library books are people and reading is conversation.

The theme for this Living Library will be remote work, online career, online business, digital nomadism.

The “Books” will be people who can talk about these topics through their personal experience and can answer any questions from the “readers”, discuss and break stereotypes, tell about their life journey that led to such employment, and generally better explain the benefits of telecommuting. They can share the advantages and disadvantages, they tell us about their positive and negative experiences, thus also conveying what skills are necessary for digital employment.

The participants of the Living Library wander from one “book” to another, so they get the maximum amount of information about what interests them.

The event will take place on August 6, 2022, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Library of the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest. The event is free of charge but requires registration.
