The creative art competition 2020 organized by the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest on the occasion of Birds and Trees Day was a great success. The contest – which lasted for almost a month – gave opportunity to Hungarian and international children between the age of 6 and 18 who are keen on nature and animals to show their artistic vein and win some valuable prizes.
In the first part of our interview, we introduced Dr Anna Schwahofer who makes decisions on thousands of animals’ lives day by day. In the second part, she talks about the daily routine of a vet working in livestock care; why she decided to find a job here instead of equine care and if there’s a pay gap between small and large animal practices. She also gives us an insight into some of her memorable cases.
Dr Anna Schwahofer, a Univet graduate of the year 2004 talked about how she could stand her ground in the formerly male-dominated livestock care. She takes care of nearly two thousand cattle and seven thousand pigs but she also visits farms, she’s called to attend to horses and she even works as a substitute in a small animal clinic.
Born in Szekszárd in 1986, dr. Gábor Mátis’ teaching career has been as straight as an arrow. He is an associate professor of the Division of Biochemistry at the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry, and he has been working as the University’s Director for Education for a few months.

We had a chat with Noémi Madarász about the Animal Health Championship. Noémi is in a special situation because she could gain experience in all the three championships yet organised. In the first two, she was among the contestants as a high-school student while this year she was one of the organisers as a first-year student of the University of Veterinary Medicine.
The University of Veterinary Medicine was home to the finals of the 3rd Animal Health Competition between 6 and 8 March 2020, where the top 10 high school teams tested their knowledge in the fields of animals, nature and environment.
Dr Péter Sótonyi, the rector of the University of Veterinary Medicine, was the guest of the writer, poet and literary historian Mihály Takaró at 9 p.m. 19th March on “The Night” show on Kossuth Radio. During the almost half-an-hour talk, the topics of Professor Sótonyi’s family, life, dedication to the horse, public role as well as the significance of the alma mater for the Hungarian veterinary faculty – and for the increasing international veterinary society – were all discussed.
