Course description

General aims of the course:

The impact of nutrition on health and disease is an important area of veterinary science. By paying attention to our patient’s nutritional needs, we can maximize health, performance, longevity, and prevent disease. Furthermore, nutrition is a cornerstone in the treatment of many diseases, such as kidney disease or gastrointestinal disease.

 

Minimal previous course requirements: physiology, anatomy

  • Physiology of digestion.
  • Digestive physiology of the neonate, postnatal development of the digestive tract.
  • Special needs of the growing foal.
  • Feeding of the orphan foal.
  • Nutrition and the microbiome.
  • Role of the microbiome in different pathologies.
  • Dysbiosis and its pathologic consequences.
  • Feed related diseases and toxicoses.
  • Nutritional management of specific equie disorders.

Practical lessons theme

  • Case based practice: case presentations and discussions (ration evaluation, special diets & general feeding challenges)
