Course description

Subject description:

The veterinary supervision of production animals kept as pets is increasingly relevant, and presents unusual challenges. Different nutritional, technological problems and infectious diseases can be seen than in intensive farming technologies.

Practicing veterinarians face challenges during caring for these animals. Throughout this course, we aim to provide insight into the most common problems affecting pet ruminants and swine.

Lectures theme

1. Legal considerations concerning pet ruminants and swine (legal standing, owner’s obligations, animal welfare)

2. Important anatomical and physiological aspects of ruminants and swine Technological problems (diseases originating from inadequate care)

3. Most common nutritional diseases affecting pet ruminants and swine (overfeeding of grain, plant toxicoses)

4. Gastrointestinal diseases of pet ruminants and swine (parasites, foreign bodies)

5. Respiratory diseases of pet ruminants and swine (bacterial, viral and fungal pathogens)

6. Diseases of the urinary and reproductive tract of pet ruminants and swine (urolithiasis, congenital disorders, dystocia, pseudopregnancy)

7. Metabolic and locomotor diseases of pet ruminants and swine (metabolic disorders, deficiencies, traumatic injuries)

8. Diseases of the nervous system and the skin of pet ruminants and swine (inectious diseases, deficiencies, ectoparasitoses)

9. Elements of management of pet ruminants and swine (antiparasitic treatments, hoof trimming, dental care, reproductive management)

10. Traditional swine breeds as pets: health considerations
