Dedicated to the memory of the outstanding lecturer and practitioner of veterinary internal medicine Dr. László Papp, we held a memorial meeting in the Department of Internal Medicine of the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest on 29th November 2019.
Dr. László Papp’s entire life and his professional career were committed to the University of Veterinary Medicine, more specifically to the Department of Internal Medicine. This is where he taught for nearly 40 years and trained veterinarians to practice their profession at a high level. “I doubt there are any vets in Hungary who didn’t know him or wouldn’t remember him with respectful love and who wouldn’t be shaken by his loss.” (Dr. Károly Vörös)
Insight into the clinical, training and research work at the Department of Internal Medicine
In his opening speech, head of the Department and Clinic of Internal Medicine Dr. Ferenc Manczur said they decided to break with the tradition of the past few years and, instead of scientific lectures and clinical case studies, this time they gave a presentation on the scientific, research and training activities of the Department of Internal Medicine as part of the annual Dr. László Papp Memorial Evening: “We wanted to share some details about the life and the achievements of the department which we are so proud of. We’ve been working with highly dedicated colleagues in our department for years and we are now presenting the fruits of their relentless efforts,” he added.
The invitation was extended to all former colleagues, fellow vets and associates of other departments who wanted to get an insight into the department’s life and operation. In his presentation, Professor Dr. Károly Vörös introduced the Department of Internal Medicine through the books published over the past 133 years. He was followed by Department and Clinic of Internal Medicine associate, clinical veterinarian and e-learning manager Dr. Márton Balogh, who talked about the launch of the “skills lab” and the related efforts for a modernized practical training programme.
Head of the Outpatient Ward of the Department and Clinic of Internal Medicine Dr. Ákos Máthé, head of the Instrumental Diagnostics Ward Dr. Csaba Hetyey, head of the Endoscope Laboratory Dr. Psáder Roland, and head of the Intensive Therapy Ward Dr. Zsuzsanna Vizi gave brief presentations on the organizational structure and operation of their units and their contribution to the training of veterinary students.
New Dialysis Centre opens
In an effort to establish a tradition, the “Let’s get to know each other” programme was launched by Dr. Péter Sótonyi nearly a decade ago; back when he was the dean before the University became independent. The idea was to allow departments and colleagues to get an insight into each other’s work. The past years have seen the introductions of several departments. This year it was the Department of Internal Medicine ’s turn to give the university’s invited guests a look into the unit’s clinical, training and research work. The event also featured the official inauguration of the new “Dialysis Centre”.
After the introductory presentations, Rector Dr. Péter Sótonyi, Head of Department Dr. Ferenc Manczur and Dr. Fruzsina Falus inaugurated the new Dialysis Centre which, as a result of 10 years of hard work, is now open for sick doggies.
“We owe a lot to Dr Fruzsina Falus, who helped the Dialysis Centre to become a reality. She was the one who, together with the associates of Semmelweis University’s Paediatric Nephrology Ward, spared no effort to collect all the knowledge that was then passed on to our colleagues so that this centre could start its operation,” Professor Manczur emphasized.
The “Let’s get to know each other” programme offers an opportunity for the University of Veterinary Medicine’s different departments to show each other their progress, and give an account of their achievements and future goals to the University staff and fellow veterinarians as well. We hope this tradition will go on and we will see the presentations from other departments next year.
