The Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) has expanded its collaboration in the field of animal welfare through an agreement with the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest. On the occasion of the signing, the BRFK also released another attention-grabbing video.

To promote awareness of responsible pet ownership and social responsibility, a cooperation agreement was signed on July 1, 2022, by Prof. Dr. Péter Sótonyi, rector of the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest, and Chief Inspector General Tamás Terdik. The University, among other things, develops professional protocols and educational materials for police officers regarding interventions at the scene of animal abuse or prohibited animal fighting events. The BRFK delivers lectures on crime prevention topics to university students. Additionally, the parties collaborate on informative materials, attention-grabbing projects, and preventive communication.

The Budapest Police Headquarters puts special emphasis on detecting, interrupting, and ideally preventing animal abuse. In February, they signed a cooperation agreement with the Animal Rescue League, and this year marks the third joint campaign with the Rex Dog Shelter Foundation to find homes for shelter dogs.

The need for coordinated action is evident as, since January 1, 2020, 88 cases of animal abuse have been registered in the capital city. During this time, Budapest police officers and their collaborating partners have saved over 200 animals. The capture of Sanyi, the penguin that escaped from the zoo, not only made headlines in the Hungarian media but also inspired the meme creators. Rescuing dogs and cats has become almost a daily occurrence, but during interventions, deer, horses, goats, pigs, rabbits, and even an entire bee colony have been encountered.
