On May 26th, the University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest held its Heroes’ Day commemoration, where Dr. Judit Hammerstein, Deputy Director of the Hungarian National Museum, delivered a ceremonial speech at the plaque located at the building of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. After visiting and laying wreaths at other locations that commemorate the heroes, the statue of Professor Gyula Kómár, a surgeon, created by sculptor András Kontur, was unveiled in the park of the University. Rector Dr. Péter Sótonyi praised the life of the esteemed professor. The statue was unveiled by Professors Dr. Péter Sótonyi, Dr. József Tóth, and Dr. Tibor Németh. The family, represented by Dr. Gyula Kómár, a veterinarian and the grandson of Dr. Gyula Kómár, expressed gratitude for the erection of the statue.

The University maintains an old tradition with Heroes’ Day commemoration: as early as 1926, a plaque was placed on the wall of the current Library, commemorating the names of veterinarians and veterinary students who fell in the war. This happened shortly after a law was passed in 1924 to commemorate the memory of the fallen heroes of World War I, declaring the last Sunday of May each year as a memorial day.
