When is the best time to visit Hungary? The answer is on St. Stephen’s Day – August 20th

Have you ever wondered what do Hungarians celebrate on August 20th?

Well, August 20th is St. Stephen’s Day and is the greatest national holiday for Hungarians. We celebrate the foundation of the Hungarian state more than 1000 years ago.

On this special day, we celebrate with day-long festivities followed by spectacular fireworks, display over the Danube …it’s like Hungary’s 4th of July.

The day usually begins in the morning according to military and state tradition with the hoisting of the national flag, with a speech given by the President of the Republic, János Áder. This is followed by an air and naval show performed by the Hungarian Defence Force. Events are closed at the banks of the Danube with the traditional firework display beginning at 9 p.m.
