History of the Department
The Department of Exotic Animal-, Wildlife-, Fish- and Honeybee Medicine was established on January 1st, 2014 by combining the Division of Exotic Animal and Wildlife Medicine of the Department of Pathology and the Exotic Division of the Department of Internal Medicine. In addition to the clinical patient care of exotic animals, the new department also carries out pathological and diagnostic work. The unit also conducts animal health monitoring investigations and preventive control programs for huntable and protected wild species in Hungary. At the request of investigating authorities and courts, the department also does forensic expert examinations and opinions in the fields of wildlife health, hunting, wildlife management, and wildlife breeding. The department teaches the mandatory “Avian and Exotic Animal Medicine” in English, as well as several optional courses. In addition to the “Expert on Exotic Animal Medicine” postgraduate specialist training, the department also organizes the “Bee Health Expert” and “Wildlife Expert” trainings.

Complete veterinary care for exotic pets, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, degu, chinchillas, rats and other small rodents as well as ornamental birds and terrarium animals (lizards, snakes, turtles).
– Division of Hunting, Game and Wildlife Management

The division of Hunting, Game and Wildlife Management was founded in 2015. Since then, it is in charge of research topics and educational tasks related to hunting, wildlife management, and conservation. The division is responsible for the specialized training of graduate students in Wildlife Management and the post-graduate course on Wildlife Damage Assessment.
– Division of Aquaculture and Fish Hygiene –

The division operates at the university’s Rottenbiller Street site under the leadership of Dr. Ferenc Baska, associate professor. The tasks of the division are to teach professional knowledge related to fish and other fished aquatic organisms, including mandatory and optional courses. In addition to education, it provides expert advice to fish producers and operators of fishing
waters, and in cooperation with the Department of Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture, does research within the framework of a jointly founded “Fishing Research Group”.
– Division of Apiculture and Honeybee Medicine –

The tasks of the division include the operation of a practical apiary in the faculty’s Üllő site and the practical education that takes place there, as well as bee health research and, last but not least, the promotion of beekeeping among veterinary students.
– Division of Zoo and Wildlife medicine –
The Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden is a satellite department of the University of Veterinary Medicine, Budapest and serves as a centre for research and education in the field of zoo and wildlife medic for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The members of the veterinary team are, both in Hungarian standards, and internationally accredited specialist involved in numerous conservation projects and various fields of research. The clinical, and also the work in pathology done at the institution plays a critical role in the management of endangered species both as individuals, but also on a population level.
