Aladár Aujeszky (1869 – 1933)

Professor of microbiology, director of the Hungarian Royal State Institute of Bacteriology.

He was the first to distinguish what he called ’the infectious paralysis of the medulla oblongata’ from rabies. This disease was later named after him and is now called Aujeszky-disease all over the world.

He introduced protective measures against rabies, which meant a combination of preventive vaccination combined with the execution of strict management measures. His method helped eliminate urban rabies in Hungary.

He was appointed Vice-Rector several times.
